but a friend of mine had a similar problem a few years back with his Corvette ('96). Basically it came down to him selling it or moving out because he'd be stuck with fixing it all the time. He ended up explaining to his parents his desire for the car and keeping it for quite a while. He arranged to buy $1,000 Honda that he could fix himself and was somewhat more reliable. In return, he was able to keep the Corvette (especially since the added insurance was next to nothing with multi-car, living at home discounts). If something happened with the Corvette, he stopped driving it and he promised that the car would sit until HE could afford to fix it. No parental help whatsoever. If he didn't have the money to fix it, it would sit until he did. If it sat over a year, he had to sell it. This worked out for him until he moved out a few years later.
